I don't know if this is common knowledge or not..maybe it's just new to me. We're all familiar with The Jinx, right? But guess what I found at Lybrary? This is a portion of the description:
'Here is the most convenient form of the Jinx to date. You will get all 151 issues including all summer and winter extras. Each issue is quickly accessible via a bookmark. You will get reproductions of all the old advertisements for the Jinx, the old three part index prepared by J. G. Thompson Jr., and a completely new 30 page index which has been alphabetized and spans all issues and extras.'
How much? FIFTEEN BUCKS! 904 pages. Fully searchable. In your iPad!!!
Not only is this mind blowing material but it's a real dose of mentalism history.
I have been re-reading this with happy curling toes for several days now.
Most would agree that many of the 'newest greatest' routines can trace at least a PART of their origin back to work that was first published by 'Ted or Tony.' This is the 'Ted' part..ALL if it..for $15. Does it get better?

Now THAT is a bargain. The last I saw, The Jinx was over $100 at Lybrary and took up several discs.
Great catch!

This has been available for a while now. I picked up my copy in the last year or so and I'm only about a third of the way through it. I tend to read things like this a bit more slowly and really try to absorb the material.
A big advantage of the iPad version is that if you are using GoodReader (and if you don't have it..GET IT!) you can easily annotate, highlight and otherwise make any kind of markings that you like. Then later you can find that material easily. I tend to highlight the title of each entry I want to come back to later so they all show up in my 'Annotations' list.
Recently came across a (card) force so good that I can't believe it's been relegated to history. I've never seen anyone use it because most likely, no one knows about it. I'm bringing it back!

Welcome, GCanuzzi. You may want to consider the Jinx series..and Bob Cassidy's ongoing series where he shares his insights on it. You can get this from Marketplace of the Mind..and there's a banner ad for it here on the Café.
If you find one of Bob Cassidy's posts here in the Café, you'll see a link to a listing of books he recommends. The list is free.
If you're a visual learner like me, I'd consider also Richard Osterlind's 6 DVD set based on the 13 Steps..along with the book, of course. Outstanding material.
Finally -- asking why you should add The Jinx to your collection is like asking if you NEED a gas pedal for a car or not.
I paid a small fortune for my hard copies of the Jinx..and am very excited to have a quality digital version.

Bought this digital version a while ago but it seems that there are a couple of blank/unreadable pages. I also use Goodreader on iPad and iPhone and the annotation function is beautifull (you can also draw!) and you can select how to save it. Got all my pdf's on it (L&L, Lybrary and others) and the app allows password protection so even my girlfriend can not view the material (important for the testing )
Jinx and Goodreader both a big 10+

Most mentalists go for Practical Mental Effects, which contains most of the Jinx mentalism material. But there was other stuff in the Jinx, such as the 20 card trick, that never made it to PME. Additionally, reading Ted's words is both informative and charming. There is a lot of insight there.

Had this one for a while. $15 is a steal, and I loved seeing his commentary, along with pics of business cards and other items from the era.

I also noticed the blank/unreadable pages on my copy. Seems fine on my computer with the newest Adobe Reader and on my iPad in the Adobe Reader app, but it comes up with the missing pages in iBooks. If you usually read it in iBooks or an app having issues, try a the Reader app or your computer.

Houdini's is now offering the Jinx in three softcover volumes. http://www.houdini.com/en/books/382-the-...und.html I'm not sure how satisfied I'd be with softbound books but the originals weren't even bound and at least softbound manuscripts have that new book smell.

My Father had a complete set of the Jinx original magazines but alas when he died his fiancé had all his magic stuff auctioned off at the magic circle despite my fathers wishes that it was all passed to me. I was too young to stop it all being sold off but I did manage to salvage my own copy of Bobo that my father gave me when I was 4 and Harry Baron's close up card magic that mentions my Father. I will be heading over to lybrary to pick up this collection.

A critical question in my mind is how well and how securely these reference books are bound. If Houdini Magic uses the very cheap method of just slapping some glue on the left side of the pages, adding in a thin cardboard 'cover'..and calling it good (like some of the POP (point of purchase) do), the books will not last very long or be able to be reasonably used..before the pages start 'coming apart. On the other hand, a softcover book that is bound like school text books (with sewn packets of the pages joined together and then sewn, well then, in such cases the $49.95 would be a reasonable price for the set.
Does anyone know about the exact binding method being used by Houdini Magic on the three softcover volumes of 'The Jinx'?

Blank or strange looking pages are caused by PDF viewers which do not support the latest compression standards. Apple is known for underperforming PDF support. For example Preview, which comes standard with every Mac, is the worst PDF viewer I know. iBooks is not bad but not great either. The reason for this is that Apple and Adobe have been fighting for many years.
I recommend Adobe Reader, or Great Reader, Readmill, etc.

Turk,
I purchased the set from Houdini's in Las Vegas during my last visit. Having always wanted a physical copy of the Jinx and being in a city where spending large sums of money is an everyday occurrence, I decided to take the plunge. I'm happy I made the (minor) investment as I have spent much, much more for material of far less quality.
As far as the binding is concerned, while I am not a binding expert, I do know a bit. The books are perfect bound, so no sewn pages or anything of that sort, but I was impressed with the quality nonetheless. I've had the set for some time and haven't had pages fall out, etc. Then again, your mileage may vary. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Best,
Tony
